Startup Cost Calculator formula
Worked example
Using the calculator's default inputs, suppose you are launching a new business with 6 months of operating runway and a 10% contingency buffer:
- One-Time Setup Costs: $500 (Registration & Legal) + $3,500 (Equipment & Tools) + $4,000 (Initial Inventory) + $1,200 (Website & Branding) + $1,500 (Deposits & Setup) + $800 (Other One-Time) = $11,500
- Monthly Operating Costs: $1,500 (Rent) + $4,000 (Salaries & Contractors) + $300 (Software) + $1,200 (Marketing) + $250 (Utilities & Internet) + $250 (Other Monthly) = $7,500 / month
- Planning Parameters: 6 months of operating costs covered, 10% contingency buffer
1. Calculate Operating Reserve & Subtotal:
Operating Reserve = $7,500 * 6 months = $45,000
Subtotal = $11,500 (One-Time) + $45,000 (Operating Reserve) = $56,500
2. Calculate Contingency & Total Startup Cost:
Contingency (10%) = $56,500 * 0.10 = $5,650
Total Startup Cost = $56,500 + $5,650 = $62,150
3. Share of Total Capital:
One-Time Setup Share = ($11,500 / $62,150) * 100 = 18.5%
Operating Reserve Share = ($45,000 / $62,150) * 100 = 72.4%
Contingency Share = ($5,650 / $62,150) * 100 = 9.1%
Notice that even though upfront setup costs only $11,500, funding 6 months of operations and a 10% safety cushion brings the true total capital requirement to $62,150.
